Understanding AWS Services Terminology – Part 2

Understanding AWS Services Terminology – Part 2

As already discussed, AWS is a cloud computing service by Amazon. It is one of the most popular public cloud services in the market. In the previous post (AWS Services Terminology – Part 1), we talked about some of the basic and most used services of AWS.

In this post-part 2, we will cover few more AWS services which are very useful for developers and Cloud professionals.

1. EC2

  • EC2 stands for Elastic Compute Cloud
  • You can resize this computing based on your requirement. It is customisable and secure.
  • It makes web-scale cloud computing easier for developers.
  • It makes cloud computing more accessible as you will have complete control of your computing resources.
  • EC2 allows you to collect and configure capacity with minimal friction.

2. AWS Glacier

  •  AWS Glacier is a low-cost cloud storage service. It is secure and durable cloud storage at the same time.
  • You can have an access to archives, from a few minutes to several hours.
  • As it is low-cost cloud storage, you might face slower access time. Reading data from S3 can take minutes or days.
  • AWS Glacier can stores data for as little as $1 per terabyte, per month.
  • It provides 3 options to access archives, from a few minutes to several hours.

3. AWS IAM (Identity Access Management)

  • AWS IAM will provide secure access management to AWS services and resources.
  • You can create groups using IAM. Furthermore, you can allow or deny those users or groups to access particular servers.
  • IAM is offered at no additional charge, it is free.
  • It does have 2 components: users and groups. Many users together create a group. Roles are temporary credentials and Policies will decide whether to allow or deny a connection.

4. Amazon Inspector

  • Amazon Inspector is an automated security assessment service.
  • It uses different tools and techniques to learn the vulnerability of a single machine, single application, or an entire system.
  • It only examines EC2 instances.
  • Amazon Inspector will automatically assess applications. After the assessment, it will produce a complete list of security findings.
  • It will use methods like port scanning, dynamic security testing, source code analysis, and penetration tests.

5. KMS (Key Management Service)

  • KMS or Key Management Service is a security tool.
  • It uses 256-bit encryption for your data.
  • KMS will protect your data from hackers and cyber attacks.
  • Using AWS KMS, you can easily create and manage cryptographic keys and control their use across AWS  services and your application.
  • AWS KMS is integrated with AWS CloudTrail.
  • It is a completely secure service that uses hardware security models.

6. Kinesis

  •  AWS Kinesis will process a huge amount of data in real-time.
  • It is easier to collect, process, and analyze real-time data with Kinesis.
  • One of the key capabilities of Kinesis is a cost-effective process of the streaming data at any scale.
  • You can also choose the tools perfect for the requirements of your application.
  • Kinesis will collect, process, and store data from large streams like event logs. After processing the data, Kinesis will share it to multiple customers concurrently.

7. Amazon Lightsail

  •  It is an entry-level, easy-to-use AWS service.
  • It offers everything you need to build an application or a website comes with a monthly plan.
  • Amazon Lightsail will provide you access to a configurable VPS (Virtual Private Server) and also a pack of tools.
  • It works best if you are new to cloud computing.

8. Amazon Mobile Analytics (Amazon Pinpoint)

  • Amazon Mobile Analytics, now known as Amazon Pinpoint is a flexible and scalable marketing communication service.
  • It provides outbound and inbound marketing communication services.
  • Connecting to customers is possible via email, SMS, push, or voice.
  • It is easy to configure and is completely flexible for all marketing communication situations.
  • You can measure the success of communications with the help of delivery and campaign metrics.

9. Amazon Neptune

  • Amazon Neptune is a graph database service used to build and run applications that work with highly connected datasets.
  • It is a fast, fully-managed, and secure graph database service.
  • Amazon Neptune has similar features like an enterprise SQL database. Some of those features include query planning tools, ACID transaction support, and cloning.
  • It supports graph models like Property Graph, W3C’s RDF, and query languages like Apache TinkerPop Gremlin and SPARQL.

10.Amazon Personalize

  • Amazon Personalize will improve customer engagement and conversions with the use of the real-time personalized product and content recommendations.
  • It uses the same technology used at Amazon.com to integrate personal recommendations on the website.
  • So, basically you will be able to create private, personalized recommendations built from the customer data.
  • No need to worry about safety as the data will be encrypted to be private and will only be used to create recommendations for the users.
