DigitalOcean launches a new PaaS service called App-Platform

Digitalocean, the cloud infrastructure provider headquartered in New York City recently announced a new PaaS offering called as “App-Platform”. It is build on top of Digitalocean’s own Kubernetes platform and it helps developers automate their infrastructure management so that they can deploy to production more easily and in a faster way.

App Platform maximizes the productivity by letting the developers deploy code directly from their GitHub repositories and they can choose to re-deploy automatically when updates are pushed to the source repo.

“With millions of businesses started in the cloud each year, developers need a simple, fast and scalable way to ship the apps that power their ideas,” said Apurva Joshi, VP of Product, DigitalOcean. “The App Platform is one of the few PaaS products built on a shared Kubernetes platform. We automatically analyze your code, create containers, and run them on Kubernetes clusters. Since we embrace open, cloud-native standards, there’s little to no code customization needed to use the App Platform,” Joshi stated.

With the App-platform, Digitalocean is trying to go after the SMB markets (small & medium businesses) which are mostly underserved.

The App platform leverages the power, scale, and flexibility of Kubernetes without exposing developers to its complexity, DigitalOcean explained. Additionally, the platform is built on open standards that provide more visibility into the underlying infrastructure than in a typical PaaS (Platform-as-a-service) environment, according to the company.

Initially the App-platform supports programming languages and frameworks like Python Node.js, Go, PHP, Ruby and Hugo, and is available now with a free tier for static sites and additional paid tiers. App Platform is currently being offered in DigitalOcean’s FRA (Frankfurt), NYC (New York), and AMS (Amsterdam) regions, and other regions will come online shortly.
